What is ABA Therapy?

Founded on evidence-based research, Applied Behavioral Analysis or ABA therapy is designed for children who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It can help them make positive, lasting changes that lead to a higher quality of life.

How ABA Therapy Works?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is considered the “gold standard” for the treatment of children on the autism spectrum recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and other leading agencies. ABA therapy uses the latest evidence-based treatment to help improve your child’s language and communication, social skills, and self-care skills. It also aims to help reduce any challenging behaviors that are ongoing. Overall, the goal of ABA therapy is to improve the independent functioning and quality of life for the child and family.

ASD Evaluations

In addition to ABA therapy, we perform comprehensive evaluations for children who are thought to possibly have ASD. Based on the wishes of the family, we may also assess for the presence of diagnoses such as intellectual disability, ADHD, anxiety, and depression as the symptoms of these disorders are often similar to and can co-occur with ASD.

Our Unique Approach to ABA Therapy

Yount Psychological Services offers two main therapeutic programs to give learners with autism the best chance of success. Both programs are designed to be individualized to the learner and build one upon the other to help advance the child through therapy to “graduation” as they transition to more time in an educational setting.

IGNITE is our therapy program for children with autism typically aged 1-5. It focuses mainly on foundational skills in the areas of communication, social and play, and self-care. Each area is individualized to the learner throughout therapy.

ELEVATE is our therapy program for children with autism typically aged 4-8. This program focuses on closing any remaining gaps in a child’s foundational knowledge and building skills in the areas of more complex communication, social thinking, and problem solving. Children in this program may or may not be enrolled in school. Again, these areas are individualized to the learner throughout therapy.

What type of things can we work on with your child in both IGNITE and ELEVATE?

  • Potty training - This involves an individualized approach for your child and caregiver training and involvement for success in all environments.
  • Food selectivity training. Again, an individualized approach and we partner with caregivers to create goals that you will work on with your child at home.
  • Safety, social, and play skills - These are crucial skills that may involve the use of virtual/immersive technology as well as natural environment training to help maximize results for your child.
  • Functional communication - This training involves helping children with little to no speech begin to communicate in a functional manner to get their needs and wants met.
  • More complex language and reasoning skills - These programming is more common in our ELEVATE program as children are typically more vocal at this stage in therapy. This programming involves training to help children establish relational thinking and responding.

In all programs, Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are responsible for implementing the treatment plan designed by the BCBA with caregiver collaboration. RBTs collect data on the child’s progress, and BCBAs analyze the learner’s data, make modifications to programs when needed, and provide ongoing support to RBTs. BCBAs also collaborate with and provide support to caregivers frequently throughout the program.
